Your BMI

23.9 kg/m²

Healthy weight
A healthy-weight BMI for most adults is 18.5 to 24.9.

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not tell muscle from fat or account for where you carry weight, and it is not valid during pregnancy. Treat it as a starting point for a conversation with your doctor, and see our guide to unexplained weight change in women.

How it works

Enter your height and weight, and the tool returns your body mass index and the category it falls in.

The formula and sources

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared, or 703 times pounds divided by inches squared for imperial units. It uses the World Health Organization categories: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obesity.

Assumptions

  • You are an adult.
  • BMI is used only as a quick screening number.

Limitations

BMI does not tell muscle from fat and does not measure where fat sits. It is less accurate for athletes, during pregnancy, and for older adults. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

When to see a doctor

If you are worried about your weight or a change in it, discuss it with your doctor rather than acting on BMI alone. See our guides to weight gain and weight loss.

Primary sources

The formula is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared, or 703 times your weight in pounds divided by your height in inches squared.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for women?

BMI uses the same formula for everyone and does not account for muscle, body shape or where fat sits. It works as a rough population screen but is limited for any one person.

What is a healthy BMI for a woman?

18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range in the WHO categories. Two women with the same BMI can still have very different body composition and health.

Why is my BMI high if I exercise a lot?

Muscle is denser than fat, so lean, very active women often read as overweight on BMI while being healthy. This is a well-known limit of the number.

Does BMI apply during pregnancy?

No. BMI is not used to track weight in pregnancy; your maternity team follows pregnancy-specific guidance instead. See our pregnancy weight gain calculator.
