Magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate are two of the most popular forms on supplement shelves, but they are not interchangeable. The clearest practical difference is their effect on the bowel: citrate is more likely to loosen stools, while glycinate is usually chosen when that effect is not wanted.
Claims that glycinate is uniquely effective for sleep, stress, or muscle cramps are much less certain, and head-to-head absorption data between forms is genuinely mixed: a 2024 clinical comparison found no measurable rise in blood magnesium after bisglycinate, while oxide did raise short-term levels (Nutrients, 2024). Those benefits are often stronger in marketing than in clinical research. The best choice therefore depends less on a promised symptom cure and more on your main goal, digestive tolerance, total magnesium intake, and medical history.
The short answer
Choose magnesium citrate when occasional constipation is part of the problem and a stool-loosening effect would be useful.
Choose magnesium glycinate when you want a form that is less likely to affect your bowel. It is commonly taken in the evening, but it has not been proven consistently superior to citrate for sleep, stress, PMS, or muscle cramps.
If you simply want to raise a low magnesium intake, either form can contribute. Food remains the foundation, and the elemental magnesium dose on the label matters more than the large compound weight printed on the front of the bottle.
What each form is
Magnesium supplements contain magnesium combined with another substance so the mineral can be delivered in a stable tablet, capsule, or powder.
Magnesium glycinate, also called magnesium bisglycinate, combines magnesium with the amino acid glycine. It is often marketed for relaxation and sleep and is generally considered gentle on digestion. However, evidence that the glycine in a typical magnesium glycinate dose creates a unique calming effect remains limited.
Magnesium citrate combines magnesium with citric acid. It is soluble and readily absorbed, but it can also draw water into the bowel and loosen stools, especially at higher doses. That may be useful for occasional constipation and inconvenient for someone who already has loose stools.

Choosing by your goal
If constipation is the main problem
Citrate is usually the more practical option because it may soften stools. The effect depends on the dose and product, so start with the amount on the label rather than assuming more will work better. Too much can cause diarrhea, urgency, or abdominal cramping.

If sleep is the main problem
Glycinate is commonly chosen at night because it is less likely to loosen stools. That practical advantage is real; a clear sleep-specific advantage is not yet established.
A 2025 randomized trial found that magnesium bisglycinate produced a modest improvement in insomnia severity among adults with poor sleep (Sleep Health, 2025). Earlier systematic reviews found that randomized trials of magnesium and sleep were inconsistent (J Res Med Sci, 2022). The evidence is promising enough to justify careful wording, not a claim that glycinate is a proven sleep treatment.

If stress or PMS is the main problem
Magnesium has been studied for stress, mood, and premenstrual symptoms, but the research is mixed and usually evaluates magnesium in general rather than proving that glycinate is the best form.
Glycinate can still be a reasonable choice if you want a daily supplement with fewer bowel effects. That is a tolerability decision, not evidence that the form treats stress or PMS better than citrate.
If muscle cramps are the main problem
Magnesium is frequently recommended for cramps, but trials in people with ordinary nocturnal leg cramps have not shown consistent benefit. A Cochrane review concluded that meaningful prevention is unlikely in older adults, while evidence for pregnancy-associated cramps remains conflicting (Cochrane review, 2020).
Cramps caused by true magnesium deficiency may improve when the deficiency is corrected. Recurrent, severe, one-sided, or exercise-limiting cramps should not automatically be treated with supplements.
If you simply want to raise your intake
Either form can contribute elemental magnesium. In that situation, compare the dose, price, quality testing, capsule size, and digestive effects rather than choosing by marketing claims.

What the evidence actually supports
The strongest practical difference between these forms is the bowel effect of citrate. Its solubility and tendency to loosen stools are better established than many of the symptom-specific claims made for glycinate.
For sleep, stress, PMS, and muscle cramps, the evidence relates mostly to magnesium supplementation overall. Glycinate may be easier to tolerate and one recent trial reported a modest sleep benefit, but direct evidence showing that glycinate consistently outperforms citrate is limited.
That distinction matters. A form can be reasonable to try without being the clinically proven “best” option for a symptom.
How much should you take?
Adult women need:
- 310 mg per day at ages 19–30;
- 320 mg per day from age 31 onward;
- 350–360 mg per day during pregnancy, depending on age.
These figures include magnesium from both food and supplements. They are not target supplement doses.
The US upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medications is 350 mg per day for adults unless a clinician recommends otherwise. Magnesium naturally present in food does not count toward this limit. The limit is based mainly on the risk of diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping, and it does not apply to higher therapeutic doses prescribed and monitored by a clinician.
Check the line that says elemental magnesium. A label may list 1,000 mg of magnesium glycinate compound while providing a much smaller amount of actual magnesium.
Can you take both forms?
You can, but most people do not need to use both routinely.
Someone might use glycinate as a daily supplement and citrate occasionally when constipation appears. If you combine them, add up the elemental magnesium from every supplement and remember that citrate's bowel effect depends on the product and dose, not only on the elemental magnesium total.
There is no need to taper, cycle, or “reset” magnesium when changing forms.
Safety, side effects, and interactions
Both forms can cause side effects, although citrate is more likely to loosen stools.
Possible effects include:
- diarrhea;
- abdominal cramping;
- nausea;
- bowel urgency.
People with kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements without medical advice because impaired kidneys may not clear excess magnesium effectively.
Magnesium can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and some osteoporosis medicines, including bisphosphonates. These products usually need to be separated by several hours according to the medication instructions. Certain diuretics can alter magnesium losses, while long-term proton-pump inhibitor use can contribute to low magnesium levels.
Ask a clinician or pharmacist before supplementing if you take regular medication, have kidney disease, are pregnant, or use magnesium citrate as a laxative.
When neither form is the right answer
A supplement comparison is not always the most useful next step.
Talk with a health professional if you have:
- chronic or worsening constipation;
- persistent insomnia;
- recurrent painful cramps;
- weakness, tremor, numbness, or an abnormal heart rhythm;
- known kidney disease;
- symptoms that began after a new medication;
- a suspected deficiency caused by gastrointestinal disease, surgery, alcohol misuse, or long-term medication use.
Magnesium deficiency is uncommon in otherwise healthy people eating a varied diet, and vague symptoms do not confirm it. A broader assessment may be more useful than switching repeatedly between supplement forms.
